Yesterday was a really special day for us at First Baptist. Other than the obvious blessings we normally experience week to week (gathering with God's people, experiencing the presence of the Lord as He uniquely dwells in our assemblies, hearing God's Word proclaimed, His praises sung, prayers being lifted to Him, and partaking of the body and blood of the Lord) we were graced with the privilege of recognizing new members to our body.
Membership is a pretty big deal to us at FBC because of the historic Baptist principle of regenerate church membership (i.e. only people who make a credible professions of faith should be members of the church) and because of what we see and believe about the local church based on Scripture (see this post). So adding new members to our fellowship is, to us, a huge celebration of Christ's faithfulness to care for His Church and a recognition of God's grace among us and, in particular, in the lives of those becoming members. We are so grateful that God is seeing fit to add to His Body at First Elsberry.
Our sermon text yesterday was 1 Corinthians 15:35-58. The title of the sermon was "Not in Vain." You can listen to it on the audio player below.
